Jim Burnside was born in Boyle County, KY, worked on tobacco farms as a teenager, and moved to Lexington in his teens. He is a veteran of the US Air Force Security Service and a former Boy Scout Scoutmaster.
At the encouragement of a good friend who is also a carver he started carving wood. His first Wood Spirit was small and simple. With encouragement he continued and developed his style. In his work he tries to bring out the best features in each piece of wood.
Jim enjoys working with tobacco sticks because they are old and have lots of character. He adds, “They soon will disappear from our farms.”
Jim Burnside’s work can be found at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
