Sr. Alice Marie Schmersal worked as an educator for over fifteen years in Corbin, KY. She says she found that “highlighting beauty was one way to impart to students and adults alike a deeper appreciation for it.”
A friend introduced Sr. Alice Marie to making batiks using water color on rice paper, instead of dye on cloth. She enjoyed the way the texture of the rice paper is visible in the finished card.
Sr. Alice Marie hopes that by sharing the beauty of the flowers, butterflies and birds depicted in batik on her cards she can “spread and share peace and harmony among others.”
Sr. Alice Marie Schmersal’s work can be found at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
