Townsend’s Sorghum has been produced on the same family farm in Jeffersonville, KY since the late 1800s. Danny Townsend is the fifth generation sorghum producer who took over the family business in the mid 1980s. Townsend’s pure cane sorghum has been voted National Champion Sweet Sorghum twice.
Sorghum cane is grown, harvested, and put into a press where all the natural juice is squeezed out of the plant. This juice is then heated to a boil and the impurities are skimmed off the top and removed. The boiling process also causes the juice to thicken to the consistency of honey.
Townsend’s sorghum contains many of the daily recommended vitamins and minerals including potassium, phosphorous and iron. It contains no chemical additives or preservatives.
Sorghum can be eaten on biscuits, pancakes and can be used as a natural sugar substitute in pies, cakes, cookies and muffins. It can also sweeten coffee or hot tea.
Townsend’s Sorghum is a KENTUCKY PROUD product. and is a member of the Roadside Farm Market and can be found at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
