Jeff Gieringer, Berea, KY

Powdermill Pottery & Gallery

clay - crystalline pottery

Jeff Gieringer grew up in Cincinnati, OH, where his mother taught ceramics. Throughout high school and college, Jeff studied sculpture more than wheel thrown or hand built pottery, though the interest in the wheel was always there. He entered the business world after college and only dabbled in ceramics for 22 years. In 1997 Jeff convinced a demonstrating potter to let him try his hand at throwing a pot and he was hooked. In 2005 he and his wife Lesa decided to leave the business world and do what they enjoyed the most, running a business together making pots.

In 2007 Jeff was invited to attend Krystallos, a gathering of the top names in crystalline pottery from around the world. Since Krystallos, Jeff’s main interest has been in crystalline. Jeff was one of 50 crystalline artists invited to be a part of the Crystalline Spectrum at the Tyler Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia in 2008.

Jeff comments, “Some may call my interest in crystalline an obsession, but it is this drive for the perfect crystalline pot that produces the beautiful pots that rise from each firing.” Jeff adds, “I attribute my success in crystalline to the excellent guidance of Bill Schran and John Tilton, two very successful crystalline artists.” Jeff is a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen.

After living in the Smoky Mountains, Lesa and Jeff have returned to KY. They are running Powerdmill Pottery and Gallery together in Berea, KY where they are continuing to create and grow as artists.

Jeff’s work can be found at Powdermll Pottery & Gallery, Berea, KY and the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
