Joan Surber has always had a fascination for art starting in high school where she did sketching and painting. She became serious about painting after watching a TV special on watercolors. She was amazed by the qualities of softness, flow, and rich color that watercolor painting afforded and the medium’s quick drying time greatly appealed to her.

Soon after seeing this TV program, Surber discovered that a wildlife watercolor artist living in her hometown gave painting lessons. She began taking painting classes, painting as often as she could while raising two children, working part-time as a hairdresser, and participating in several art shows per year.

Surber moved from Ohio to Bowling Green, Kentucky in 1998 and was working full-time with two kids in college. With little time to paint, she began creating note cards from her original watercolor paintings. In 2005 she began producing note cards with images of wildlife, snow, butterflies and dragonflies, and scenes of the KY Derby.
