The Bluegrass Oakwood Stool was developed in the early 1970s, shortly after the Bluegrass Oakwood facility opened. The stool was developed by staff to create an on-campus employment opportunity for some of the facility’s approximately 180 developmentally disabled residents.

In developing the design, the staff looked for tasks that could be done with a diverse workforce. Oakwood’s workforce has always consisted of individuals possessing different talents as well as different limitations. The stool design developed can be produced by residents with minimal staff supervision.

The stool frames are made from local hardwoods, which are kiln dried. They are then cut, sanded, stained, and assembled on-site at Oakwood. A woven fiber rush seat is then added, creating a stair step shape on the seat of the stool. This stool has been juried into the Kentucky Arts Council’s Kentucky Crafted Program.

Bluegrass Expressions’ stools can be found at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
