Tom and Joanne Blanck have been making oval Shaker boxes since the 1980s. Their boxes are copies of an original Shaker design, and are made from walnut, cherry, or maple wood in a variety of sizes. They speak of continuing the Shaker tradition of “striving for perfection in woodworking” in all their hand-made items.
Each box is hand sanded or rubbed three to four times. They finish the walnut boxes with a high gloss lacquer and the cherry boxes with Danish Oil. Boxes made of maple are painted with an old fashioned milk paint, which they hand rub, wearing some of the paint off in the process.
The Blancks are juried members of the Kentucky Arts Council’s Kentucky Crafted program.
