A native of Bowling Green, KY, Mark Whitley holds a B.A. in peace studies/religions from Chapman University in Orange, CA. In a small shop in the outskirts of Smith’s Grove, KY. Mark combines old-world craftsmanship with native hardwoods to create furniture with a style of its own. Natural oil finishes bring out the inherent beauty of wood grain and texture.
Mark approaches furniture as functional pieces of art. He says that as a studio craftsman his primary focus is on the holistic aesthetics of the piece: the way each piece of wood is joined in harmony with others, the relationship of the top with the back, the sides with the shelves, and the doors with the whole piece. He uses curves and different species of wood sparingly and in a thoughtfully intentional manner— to enhance a piece of furniture while maintaining the integrity of the design.
Mark Whitley’s work can be found at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
