Marcy Samples Rowland is the daughter of well known Louisville silversmith and jeweler Jane Samples. Marcy grew up in Louisville and settled in Murray, KY, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in weaving from Murray State University.
Having always been interested in birds, Marcy’s interest became a vocation after watching a bird feather wood carving demonstration in 1989. She has since designed and developed a line of bird feather jewelry including necklaces, barrettes, earrings, pendants and pins.
While Marcy collects some actual feathers for visual reference, she also researches feathers in books. She chooses to carve feathers that have visual appeal or a pattern that is dramatic and recognizable. Marcy hand carves her jewelry from basswood and textures it with a wood burning pen. She uses acrylic paints and sealers to finish the work and incorporates an assortment of clay, heishi and stones for embellishment. The earrings have surgical stainless steel French earring hooks and backs.
Marcy Samples Rowland’s works can be found at True Kentucky, Glendale, KY;at Land Between the Lakes National Resort; and at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
