A native of Pineville, Kentucky, John Hendrickson has lived in the area all his life. John is a radiologic Technologist and is currently the Director of the Radiology Department at the Pineville Community Hospital.
Hendrickson first did some woodcarving with his father in the 1960’s carving dogs, horses and birds until his father’s death in 1970. After his father’s death, he continued woodworking but did not do any carving.
When he attended the “Caricature Carvers of America Woodcarving Show” in Dollywood, TN in 1994, he met members of the Smokey Mountain Woodcarving Club. Members Gary Falin, Wayne Skinlever, Jack Williams and others, introduced him to caricature carving. He has since had the opportunity to carve with members of this club and also with master woodcarver Helen Gibson of the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. Hendrickson has also studied with Larry Green, author of “Carving Boots and Shoes.”
Hendrickson is a member of Pine Mountain Woodcarvers in Pineville, Kentucky. He became a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen in 2005 and became a juried member of the Kentucky Art Council’s Kentucky Craft Marketing Program in 2006. John had one of his carvings in the top 28 chosen for publication in Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine’s annual Santa Carving contest in 2007.
