Jennifer Shackleton is an avid greenhouse gardener specializing in herbs. She began cultivating her interest in plants and nature as a young child roaming the woods on her grandparents’ farm near Rough River Lake in Kentucky.
In 2005, Jennifer formed a business called “The Herb Shack” and began to grow culinary and medicinal herbs organically, using biodegradable pots instead of plastic containers in order to be environmentally responsible. As an outgrowth of her greenhouse business, Jennifer began studying and experimenting with other uses for herbs. Using her knowledge of the medicinal and health benefits of plants and botanicals, she began creating herbal soaps that are nourishing to the skin.
In 2008 she expanded her business by leasing greenhouses in southwest Jefferson County. She changed the name of her business to “Bearcamp Botanicals” to encompass both her herbal soaps and plant business. She continues her wholesale and retail greenhouse growing operation which specializes in growing bedding plants, annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables as well as mums and poinsettias.
Bearcamp Botanicals can be found at Bernheim Forest Arboretum, Clermont; Vance’s True Value Hardware, Louisville; and the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
