Born in West Liberty, KY, Marta Elam Dorton moved with her family to Lexington when she was two. Her family returned to their native eastern Kentucky home often, giving Marta a sense of family, place and connection to that part of the state.
Marta earned a BA in studio art from the University of Kentucky with an emphasis in painting. She then went on to work in the graphic arts industry for 20 years. Her job included the use of custom black and white photograph printing, billboard production and sign making. As a result she and her husband Kent owned a sign and silkscreen printing business for many years.
Marta has recently returned to creating acrylic paintings, pastel paintings and has delved into printmaking. Her works includes landscapes and water views as well as non-representational images and abstractions. Her strong graphic arts background informs her elements of design and contrast, her close-up views and her colorful palette. She looks to her roots and her beloved Kentucky mountains for inspiration.
Works by Marta Elam Dorton can be found at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
