Mary Tortorici teaches at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY. She has always been a photographer and has been recording her surroundings for many years. She states, “I have always been intrigued by the intimate personal spaces of yards- sanctuaries constructed within well-defined plots of land, within which nature and human nature become dramatized. Yards to me present the interactive architecture of people and nature.
I set out to find and photograph some redeeming value in the mundane of American domestic culture and to include all the symbols and iconography- a measure of the world in the metaphor of yards.”
