Bruce Wess worked for 17 years as a school psychologist before deciding that what he really wanted to do was nature photography. After several years of part time photo work, Bruce became a full-time black and white photographer, focusing his work on landscapes, nature and the portrayal of Kentucky’s beauty.
Bruce specializes in black and white photography and does all of his own developing and printing. Bruce explains, “I enjoy working in black and white because of its minimalist emphasis on form and tonality. This medium also gives me complete control of the creative process – from capturing the image on film, to developing the film, to printing the image in the darkroom. I go from taking pictures to actually creating photographs.” All the variations such as tinting, toning and special effects are accomplished through traditional darkroom methods.
Bruce is a juried member and serves on the Board of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen. He gives lectures and teaches Nature and Outdoor Photography and his photographs have been featured in such publications as Nature Photography and Blue Ridge Country. He has received numerous awards for his work.
