Barbara Harrell has been painting since the 1970s, but it was in the late 1980’s that she became involved with painting figures, and then accessories. As a result of her enjoyment of old catalogues, magazines, newspapers, family photos, and antiques shops, she began to feel a desire to “bring yesterday’s fashions to life.”
She began by painting life-size figures cut from plywood, using acrylics and then coating them with clear lacquer. She soon added various accessories to the line, including purse mirrors, umbrella stands, hand mirrors, and more. For the hand mirrors she uses reproductions of her paintings.
Since becoming involved with this work, Barbara has taken courses at Murray State University and taken workshops through the Murray Art Guild. In 1991 she became a juried member of the Kentucky Crafted program and the Kentucky Guild of Artists & Craftsmen. Barbara continues to find it exciting and rewarding to create this work.
Works by Barbara can be found at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
