Leathersmith Philip L. Phillips operates his business Dixie Leather Works in a Queen Anne style Victorian home in Paducah’s historic Lower Town. Using time proven techniques, tools, and machines that have not changed for 150 years, Philip and two other crafts persons produce over 60 different hand crafted leather items historically documented from the 1832-1876 period.
Philip and his associates are dedicated to preserving this ancient craft which evolved from primitive man’s need for food, clothing, and shelter. Leather provided all three of these needs.
As man progressed, so did his need for interpretive and artistic expression. In addition to museum quality reproductions, Philip, Lynn McDonald, and Rick Thomas also create one-of-a kind purses and other bags, including motorcycle accessories.
Dixie Leather Works is proud of its fine quality American made leather goods.
Works by this artisan can be found at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
