Wendy Currier Zumwalt holds degrees in special education, reading and library science, and taught for 27 years before her retirement in 2005. But since discovering technical pens in 12th grade she “has never looked back.” A high energy person, Wendy loves that pen and ink are fast drying and give immediate response.
Detail, pattern, and playful design characterize Wendy's unique style of pen & ink illustration. Self-taught, she prefers solid black and bright white for a sharp contrast, but will occasionally use colored ink. Inspired by book illustrators of the 1800s, Japanese prints, and illuminated manuscript, Wendy says no subjects are off limits,
Wendy concentrates on creating original works of art, but also offers some prints and cards. She is currently exploring creating larger pieces. She comments, “The larger the area, the more detail I can draw, and that’s exciting!”
Wendy is a juried member of the Kentucky Crafted program and the Kentucky Guild of Artists & Craftsmen. She won first prize in the prestigious QX.net International Nude Show, and designed and executed the first holiday poster for the Kentucky Wine Council.
Wendy’s work can be found at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
