Originally from State College, New York, Lewis Meyer graduated from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY and came to Kentucky in 1991. He worked with Louisville blacksmith Craig Kaviar for a few months before studying blacksmithing at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. Lewis worked for two years as an apprentice blacksmith at the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, TN under Steve Yusko and Jim Wallace. In 1997 he returned to Louisville and established his own blacksmithing studio, Falls City Ironworks.
Lewis forges with both gas and coal and creates everything from small hooks to large gates and ornamental railings. He is most recently interested in the way steel is joined and focuses his designs on the way things are fitted together.
Works by Lewis Meyer can be found at the Kentucky Museum of Art & Craft, in Louisville, KY.
