Susan and Joe Brutto began weaving commercially in 1980 and soon after began weaving for the craft shop and historical buildings at Shakertown of Pleasant Hill. In addition to weaving smaller rugs, they weave many custom rag rugs, often room size—or runners as long as 40 feet. When they say custom weaving, they mean custom weaving!
Susan and Joe live on a 14-acre Kentucky farm and support themselves with their hand-woven rugs and organically grown blueberries, asparagus, and other summer vegetables. Their 1,000 sq. ft weavery and 500 sq. foot greenhouse nestle at the foot of a knob and incorporate principles of passive solar architecture.
Their rugs are cotton or wool, often featuring traditional patterns. They especially enjoy custom orders!
The Bruttos’ work can be found at Shakertown of Pleasant Hill, Harrodsburg, KY; and the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY
