Shawn and Lori Malloy started their alpaca farm with four foundation female suri alpacas in Maine in 2003. Shortly after, Lori started to dye the fleece and learned how to hand spin and wet felt. The Malloy’s bred and showed their award winning animals and continued to work outside the farm in their professional careers.
In May 2006 they bought a fiber mill and founded Flaggy Meadow Fiber Works. This mill allowed them to take raw fleece from their animals and process it into yarn, roving, and felt. This quickly led to processing other fiber for farms nationwide By 2006 both Lori and Shawn were working full time with the mill. In 2008 they moved their farm and mill to Springfield, KY.
The Molloy’s are developing their own products, including the Surino® yarn line. They assist other producers and artisans in marketing natural fiber products, and they service even the smallest fiber livestock producers. This process allows traceability from farm of origin to the end user.
Flaggy Meadow Fiber Works products can be found at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
