Steve Davis-Rosenbaum was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. In 1986, he received an MFA in ceramics from the University of Georgia. After graduating, for two years he worked as Resident Studio Potter at Berea College, Berea, KY. Since 1988, Steve has operated SDR Pottery in Lexington, KY, producing functional and decorative pottery. In addition to making maiolica (often spelled majolica) pottery, Steve is an Associate Professor of Art at Midway College in Midway, KY, where he teaches ceramics and design.
Steve writes about his work “Much of my pottery originates in the basic human joys of eating and cooking, with all their associations: fireside, nourishment, caring, celebration. Beautiful pottery dishes have become synonymous for me with love of food and its presentation. I make my pottery based on personal domestic needs and life style choices; and the focus of my production is everyday dishes for use in cooking, dining, and home decoration.”
All Steve’s pottery is thrown on the potter’s wheel and altered using hand-building techniques. His maiolica pottery refers to a process where an opaque white glaze is applied over red earthenware (terra cotta) and decorated with colored stains. All Steve’s pottery is signed “DARO,” which is an abbreviation for “Davis-Rosenbaum.”
Steve’s work can be found at the Capital Gallery in Frankfort, KY.
