Not long after James C. Rich and Diana Smith Thomas met in 2012, they began collaborating and quickly discovered they were creating something very unique with their polymer clay cane jewelry.
Drawing on his background as a pen and ink artist, James translates his designs into intricately detailed clay canes. A cane is pieces of solid color polymer clay formed into a long tube so that the design at the end is on every slice. It’s similar to the millefiori style used with class. Diana uses a design technique she has developed to transform his canes into wearable contemporary art.
Diana and James are highly collaborative with each piece they create. Diana’s inspiration for each piece of jewelry is fueled by James’ unique polymer canes. They allow her to showcase his designs and incorporate her self-created design technique to create unusual, one of a kind designs.
