Raku fired Ceramics and Horse Hair Ceramic Vessels
Al Scovern maintains a ceramic studio practice that explores a range of fast firing processes while continuing a professional life as a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist.
Scovern earned his BA degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D in Clinical Psychology from the University of South Carolina. He is essentially self-taught in throwing clay on the wheel and has been instructed and influenced by Charlie Riggs and Geoff Searle, both masters of alternative firing methods.
Scovern teaches alternative firing techniques at Kentucky Mudworks in Lexington and to high school students at the Lexington Sayre School. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries in the region and has been included in competitive juried shows throughout the country.
Scovern currently lives in Lexington, KY with his wife Diane Follingstad and their German shepherd, Loki.
