Mike McCarthy was born and raised in the Chicago area. He earned a BA in Fine Art at Bellarmine College and has continued to live and work in the Louisville, KY area.
Mike has worked in graphic design, worked for the YMCA for 15 years, and has operated his own furniture and carpentry business. Working with wood has been a part of his family history. Mike’s grandfather was a woodcarver, and his father worked in wood as a hobby as well.
In 2010 Mike turned from carving wood to carving stone, and his preferred material has become stone. Mike explains that he strives to create sculptures that have a “softness” despite being created from a material that is the essence of “hardness.” He enjoys the challenge.
Mike’ is a member of Pyro Gallery, Louisville, KY; his sculpture can be found at Revelry Gallery, Louisville, KY; and the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, Berea, KY.
