Dr. Jackie Burnside, Associate Professor of Sociology at Berea College, is a native
of Alabama and an alumna of Berea College (1974). Dr. Burnside’s Ph.D.
dissertation was an organizational analysis of Berea College as an interracial
educational institution during the 19th Century.
Recent research and journal publications focus on race relations, women’s
clubs and higher education. Currently, she is serving as project director for a
community volunteer effort to collect oral history about Berea’s black history
and produce a tour map with audio tape and a picture album book.
In addition to teaching introductory sociology, social problems, advanced
courses in race, ethnic relations and formal organizations. Dr. Burnside was an
Army sergeant whose tour of duty included living in the Panama Canal Zone
